The bitfields are ugly, but as they are basically a published interface,
it will be painful to change them. (IMO)
Bring in from NetBSD:
Bitfields are usually implemented in natural bit order. Pointed
out by Masaru Oki <oki@yk.rim.or.jp> in NetBSD PR#2091.
