much to my horror, it turns out that `\-' and `\(en' are not equivalent,
and neither are `--' and `\(em'.
this diff reworks the hyphens and dashes section, and is from ray lai;
i doubt anyone would believe how many emails we had to exchange to
sort this small issue out.
